Split Horizon (Domestic Disobedience)

In his works, Can Altay points to the ways in which legal and conventional borders are transgressed. Hence, through politics of space, he elaborates on the conflict between the traditional and the subjective. By discussing western notions and values with a focus on the novelties peculiar to the geography he comes from; Altay develops a critical language that reaches out to life-forms that manage to breathe in-between traditions and (post)modernist and globalist domination, with affection, bewilderment and admiration. “How do we inhabit the system or spaces that we are born into? To what extent are these tactics of inhabitation coded? How far can they be pushed? What are the limits that we take for granted and try to push from there on?” These are the types of questions that form his true focus.
Altay’s one-person exhibition ‘Split Horizon (Domestic Disobedience) that will take place from September 1st until October 17th, 2015 involves works that bring together some of the main subjects discussed in his earlier works, carrying them a step further with new experiments. The main threads and visual vocabulary of his work culminate in this exhibition. However, the sense of optimism and celebration inherent to his earlier works are replaced by a solemn attitude through domestic objects, urban spaces and other means of observation. Although he continues to embrace local peculiarities as objects of knowledge connected with people, the city and modernism, he adapts a more anxious, more provocative and direct tone. And, the audience is welcome to follow.

Can Altay, işlerinde kamusal alanda çeşitli yasal ve konvansiyonel sınırların hayatın akışı içerisinde ihlal ediliş biçimlerine işaret eden; böylelikle mekan politikaları üzerinden geleneksellikle öznellik arasındaki çatışmayı ele alan bir sanatçı. Altay, Batılı ve Modernist kavram ve değerleri, bize özgü ilginçlikler üzerinden tartışırken; Batı’nın çeperinde hem gelenek hem de (Post-)modernist ve globalist tahakkümlerin arasından sıyrılıp nefes almayı beceren hayat formlarına sevecenlik, hayret ve hayranlıkla yaklaşan istisnai bir eleştirel sanat dili geliştiriyor. “İçine doğduğumuz sistem veya mekanlarda nasıl barınıyoruz, bu barınma biçimlerinin ne kadarı bize kodlanmış vaziyette, ne kadarı zorlanabilir, hangi sınırları varsayıyoruz da zorlamaya çalışıyoruz gibi sorular benim asıl odak noktam.”
Altay’ın Öktem&Aykut’ta 1 Eylül – 17 Ekim 2015 tarihleri arasında gerçekleşen sergisi, sanatçının daha önceki sergi ve projelerinde de değindiği ve tartışmaya açtığı pek çok konuyu kapsayan ve önceki deneme ve önermelerini bir adım öteye taşıyan eserlerden oluşuyor. Sergi, Altay’ın üretiminin temel izleklerini ve görsel dağarcığını kapsamlı şekilde özetliyor. Fakat sanatçının önceki sergilerindeki iyimserlik ve kutlayıcılık, bu sergide bir araya getirdiği domestik nesneler, kentsel anlar ve diğer gözlem aygıtları üzerinden daha temkinli bir tavra dönüşüyor. Altay, buraya özgü tuhaflıkları insana, topluma, kente ve Modernizme mahsus incelemeye değer bilgi nesneleri olarak ele almaya devam etse de; daha kaygılı, daha kışkırtıcı ve daha direkt bir üslup takınıyor ve izleyicileri de bu üslubu benimsemeye davet ediyor.
