Selim Birsel
Selim Birsel (1963) completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees at École des Beaux-Arts in Grenoble and Institut des Hautes Etudes en Arts Plastiques in Paris. Birsel is a founding member of Turkish contemporary art scene and has been active since the 1980’s. His artistic ouevre involves drawing, painting, installation, photography, video, performance and public interventions. Birsel’s one-person exhibitions has taken place in Istanbul at Ark Kültür (2022), Öktem Aykut (2020), Riverrun (2018), Depo (2013), Egeran Gallery (2013), Gallery Apel (2009), Maçka Art Gallery (2009) and BM Contemporary Art Center (1991). He also had solo exhibitions in Volissos, Chios, Greece (2019); in Diyarbakır Art Center, Diyarbakır, Turkey (2009); in Nowa Oficyna, Gdansk, Poland (2000) and in Gallery Siyah Beyaz and in Gallery Zon in Ankara, Turkey (1996 & 1994). His work has been included in group shows in Istanbul at Arter, İstanbul Modern, Akbank Sanat, Institut Français, Apartment Project, santralistanbul and Borusan among others; at K2 in Izmir and at Salt Ulus in Ankara. Birsel’s work has been exhibited in 9th and 4th editions of Istanbul Biennial and the 1st edition of Mardin Biennial. He has also participated in group shows at Künstlerhaus Bregenz, Austria; Deajeon Museum of Art, South Korea; Museum Für Neue Kunst, Freiburg; Germany; St-Julien-Molin-Molette, France; CentrePasquArt, Biel, Switzerland; Slought Foundation, Phil- adelphia; Palais Porcia, Vienna, Austria; Milano Triennale, Milano, Italy; and IFA, Berlin, Germany among many other institutions. He published three artist books: The Visit, Backyard, Over and Beside The Works. Birsel has been teaching at Sabancı University in Istanbul since its initial foundation in 1999. He lives between Istanbul and Chios.
